Identification

1. Life Stages:

  • Egg Masses:
    • Appearance:      Grayish, brownish, or tan. Rough and putty-like texture.
    • Size:      About 1 inch long and 0.5 inches wide.
    • Season:      Laid in late summer to early fall.
  • Nymphs:
    • Appearance:      Black with white spots. As they mature, they develop red patches.
    • Size:      Small, from 1/8 inch to 1 inch in length.
    • Season:      Present from late spring to summer.
  • Adults:
    • Appearance:      Forewings are gray with black spots. Hindwings are red with black spots.
    • Size:      About 1 inch long with a wingspan of 2 inches.
    • Season:      Active from late summer to fall.
